Pediatric
and Medical Psychology
Center for Psychological
Services has psychologists that are well-trained
in the area of pediatric and medical psychology.
Adjustment to acute and chronic illness is a
major focus of this area. Medical illness
conflicts with the developmental goals of
adolescence, thereby fostering an adolescent to
be dependent upon parents, medication, and
medical professionals. This often comes at a
time when they are seeking independence. Any
child with a major illness can throw their
entire family into turmoil, even rearranging the
family hierarchy. Pediatric and medical
psychology works to restore the family unit to a
better level of functioning, while keeping in
mind the changes that occur to the individual
and their adjustment. Some of the areas of
psychology that are brought to bear are
individual counseling, pain management, clinical
hypnosis, neurofeedback, family therapy, and
group counseling.
